Bishop Appointment: Prendergast

The Holy Father appointed Archbishop Terrence Thomas Prendergast S.J. of Halifax, Canada, as metropolitan archbishop of Ottawa (area 5,818, population 859,000, Catholics 410,635, priests 239, permanent deacons 67, religious 867), Canada. He succeeds Archbishop Marcel Andre J. Gervais, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same archdiocese, the Holy Father accepted, upon having reached the age limit.

I do not know how Traditional Archbishop Prendergast is. Does anyone know anything about Archbishop Prendergast?

From what I heard - he has been vocal in Halifax - against same-sex marriage and a vocal pro-life voice in the east. He has allowed the Companions of the Cross to come into his diocese.
He used to be at Regis College in Toronto - pretty liberal school.
Hard to tell if he is or not - it was thought he was going to be picked for Toronto.
But we got AB Collins - awesome Archbishop.
He used to be the Aux. Bishop in Toronto for a short while in the 90's.

Dear Curt!

We REALLY need your help!!!!!! Please read and help us!

Many Blogs are used to 'make money' either selling a product or a service. Some are personal journals and others are for making a difference - to be a catalyst for change. Undoubtedly Alex - Road to Freedom is a blog that HAS, IS and WILL continue to make a difference. http://alex-roadtofreedom.blogspot.com

Alex ~ Road to freedom is about a 12 year old Ethiopian Street Child who has been rescued from the streets of Addis Ababa. His life expectancy was low, perhaps another 12 months when he was taken in by a family who made the commitment to adopt him. It is not a glamorous thing. Alex is not a baby, he is not 'cute', he has a scare on his face and has lived a rough life. He has emotional and psychological scars that will take time to heal and be repaired.

Two weeks ago the adoption was legally finalized and Alex celebrated his first ever birthday. In 13 years he NEVER had a birthday. Now he does! A happy ending? Well not yet! That is the trouble and we need YOU.

Please visit Alex web site ( http://alex-roadtofreedom.blogspot.com ) and then post an article on your site that tells about Alex. His father and brother are now waiting for Alex to be granted a visa to enter Albania where they live. BUT the Albanian Government is not making it easy. Alex father is distraught that his new son is going to feel betrayed and never understand why these delays keep going on. So please - do the Blogging world a GREAT service and write about Alex.

Can you PLEASE add us as a Catholic Link? We are struggling and need as much help as possible.

Thank you.

Rod

I am active in the Archdiocese of Halifax and am attending seminar in the Fall of 2007. I can confirm that Archbishop Prendergast is Traditional and Orthodox and will be missed, especially by the young. Halifax under former Bishops was one of the most liberal diocese in Canada but has been Reenergised by Bishop Terry. The Resistance by the self appointed reformers was sometimes nasty and childish. A Great man and great Leader, we will continue to pray for him. Mark

The Archbishop, in his younger days, taught at Loyola High School in Montreal, in 1968-69. ( I assume that he was a novitiate at the time.) It must be said that Loyola High School, at that time, was a rather forbidding institution -- at least as far as the students were concerned -- ruled with a fist of iron by Father Kenneth Casey SJ. Father Prendergast, as he was known to us, was relatively humane in his teaching of the fourth year honours arts class, in which he was home-room teacher and instructor in Latin. Latin, clearly, came easy to him; perhaps it was not always clear to him that it came with a bit more of a struggle to his students. All things considered, he treated us in a kindly manner. ( On the whole, the school -- teachers and students -- lived in terror of Father Casey.) Father Prendergast clearly took his duties seriously.

The Jesuits taught us logic and hard, unemotional reasoning; as a result, I think, many of us became non-believers. Perhaps there should have been a little more love in the mix.

As one of his former students -- although no longer a Catholic -- I wish Archbishop Prendergast well. He would make, I am sure a superb cardinal, and, who knows? -- pope.
